In 1979 the British film "Priest of Love" gave me my first starring film role, a new departure after years of theatre work at home and abroad. I portrayed the controversial writer D. H. Lawrence, with Janet Suzman as his wife and Ava Gardner as his patron Mabel Dodge Luhan. The film was a critical success, if not a commercial blockbuster.
