When you watching your parents or older sibs or aunts or grandparents getting they karaoke on with a hairbrush doing a two step? Chances are they are channeling brother #WilliamGuest and not even knowing it. 1/3rd of the greatest background crew of all time. #ThePips. Even that name sounds majestic & just one letter missing from what I thought they were in my childhood (the Pimps?) even though #TheFamousFlames were faster & the other groups refused to draw the line between lead & not lead singer (#TheTemptations #TheJackson5 #TheSylvers #TheFiveStairsteps #TheDynamicSuperiors) ---#GladysKnightAndThePips were the perfect compliment of a powerhouse lead singer & her enforcement crew. Never getting in the way of each other: she was the voice (top 5 voice in all of soul music---imo). They were the moves and accent of her lyrics. Probably the best call/response gospel example in pop music. I mean they literally translated and acted out all of #GladysKnight's words--even as you reading this you know and I know the words you wait for in #MidnightTrainToGeorgia is still "WHOOT WHOOT!!!" In the 70s? Talking about how smooth the Pips were was a common thing in your comedy act just like OJ in the 90s or Obama now --2 year old me STILL don't know what they were saying in "Daddy Could Swear" but damn if they sounded cool not making sense ("my daddy was a bad mon-tana/whatchu say!?/watch yo mouth! *clap clap!!*") respect due to #WilliamGuest who passed away on Christmas Eve. The smoothest, coolest who ever did it.
