Biene Jemel, left, and his brother Albel Jermain Cherise were born in the Dominican Republic, but like many Dominicans of Haitian descent, they have no way to prove it. When the Dominican government announced in June that all migrants in the country illegally had to register, farmers threatened to burn down the Jemel brothers’ home if they did not leave. Driven by fear, Biene, Albel and a third brother joined the ranks of tens of thousands of people of Haitian descent who decided to leave the Dominican Republic on their own, rather than risk deportation. @meridithkohut photographed Biene and Albel in a makeshift camp in Tête à l’Eau, #Haiti, while on #nytassignment.
