The extreme effects predicted of global #climatechange are already clear in China. Since the 1960s, the surface area of glaciers has decreased more than 10% across the country. The Mengke Glacier, one of China’s largest, retreated an average of 54 feet a year from 2005 to 2014. Previously, from 1993 to 2005, it retreated just 26 feet a year. #Glacier retreat in China and across the so-called Third Pole — the glaciers of the Himalayas and related mountain ranges — threatens Asia’s water supply. @adamjdean photographed the #MengkeGlacier, which is 6 miles long and covers nearly 8 square miles in the Qilian Range, while on #nytassignment in China.
