"#Gorillaz consists of four cartoon characters who, their creators insist, are just as alive as you and me. “We believe the band is real,” says #Blur singer Damon Albarn, who conceived Gorillaz with comic-book artist #JamieHewlett. Gorillaz’ strange and charming music – a mélange of hip-hop, electronica, rock and dub served up as gleefully catchy pop songs – came to captivate audiences, but a hit record was not something Albarn and his roommate Hewlett set out to make. “We were both split up from our long-term relationships, and we were looking for a sort of life-affirming experience,” Albarn recalls. “And that left us with horrendous hangovers.
