Photograph by Remi Benali @remibenali. Arles, France. This marble bust of Julius Caesar is one of the most stunning discoveries in the Rhône River. Found by archaeologist Luc Long and his divers at a few meters from the banks in the city center. Many scientists think that it might be the sole representation of the emperor that was made during his lifetime. How have the archaeologists come to think that 2000 years later? The marble is from an excellent quality, imported at great cost from Turkey: The man who ordered it was rich. The stylistic carving, reflecting every wrinkle and imperfection of the skin, dates the portrait from the Republican period in the first century BC and was made by a Greek sculptor (considered the most talented): The man represented was powerful. His temples are visible and the model seems to be around 50 to 55 years old (Caesar was assassinated at 56 years old in 44 BC). Caesar was born with the help of forceps as shown here on the slope of his forehead. As is the case for one man out of each 25,000, Caesar had a prominent Adam's apple, as shown on the statue. His features are dry and lean, describing a fit man (a warrior) rather than a wealthy business man of the time. There are 5 lines on his neck that symbolically represented for the Romans a lineage to the Goddess Venus as was claimed by Caesar's family, the Julii. The back of the head is flat and cut in such a way that this bust was sealed on a wall amongst a larger fresco, one most certainly honoring an Emperor. This exceptional piece can be viewed at the Musée Départemental de l'Arles antique (Arles' archaeological museum). If you plan to visit our Provence and Camargue region I strongly recommend a visit to this beautiful museum, which has the second largest archaeological collection in France after Le Louvre in Paris.
