Happy Birthday, #JanelleMonae! "When I’m assigned to shoot a portrait and the location is a hotel (which it often is), I get nervous. More often than not, it means its going to be a tiny space that undoubtedly looks, no matter how you try to rearrange it, like a hotel room — and not a cool old motel with flashing neon light streaming in like you would hope for. My mission, is to make the most interesting portrait I can given the circumstances and each time is its own challenge. With the assignment to photograph Janelle Monae the one advantage I had was knowing that she iconically only wears black and white. So all I had to do was pick an environment that would compliment that. Well as luck would have it, I walked in the hotel room and immediately noticed the shower! The metallic silver tile would be perfect. The next step would be convincing Janelle to join me in the shower — and she graciously obliged. The result is this image."
