Happy Birthday #BillyIdol! "From the start, it has been part of Idol’s dichotomous character to be the rebel outsider while simultaneously needing to belong to something. His father was a salesman, and, consequently, Idol spent his childhood moving around the south of England; he even spent four early years in America, on Long Island. The educational system left Idol feeling hurt and alienated – his imagination and thirst for learning were great, but he was inattentive to rote lesson work. Over the years, that alienation bloomed into wariness and punk hauteur. ‘I mean, people have tried to destroy me,’ says Idol. ‘And I’m not talking about critics. I’m talking about some cunt manager who’s told you he’s really into what you’re into, then he totally stops you from doing your art and leaves you without the decency of a living. Whoa, I can’t ignore that shit... Whenever I was doing what I wanted, they all came out going, ‘No, you can’t!’’ By contrast, ‘Yes, you can’ has become Idol’s rally cry as a singer, writer and guitarist."
