About the shot: With the HD3 came an even more powerful camera with another improvement to the sensor, another increase in image size and the now astonishing ability to shoot photos at 30fps. These improvements meant even higher quality images when translated to print and the ability to shoot 30fps you pretty much were guaranteed to catch the perfect frame every time.
With the #HERO3 Black I've had images appear everywhere from on giant "Wow" walls within a Fortune 500 Company to high end print publications dispelling the misconception that GoPro images don't print well and that's exactly the kind of quality and performance you want on a day when conditions come together as they did in this shot. This shot was taken on one of those rare days in Southern California when swell and conditions coincide to create magic.
How the shot was captured: Knowing the waves were good my friend @punkerpat and I headed to our favorite sandbar and found it pumping and beautiful. Punker not being one to pull back on the crazy ones paddled into this beast and travelled through one of the heaviest shorebreak caverns I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing and capturing. This image was shot on 30/1 burst so I had plenty of frames to choose from but this was easily my favorite of the sequence.
The over the shoulder angle was achieved by having my GoPro attached to the end of a two foot pole. It's still one of my favorite surfing shots I've taken to date due to the composition of Punker styling in a liquid cave with the shoreline just feet away.
