The brooding rainforests that coat the islands’ mountainous hide hold some of the finest surviving stands of ancient cedar, spruce and hemlock“. - (National Geographic Magazine, July 1987, Page 104) This quote from nearly 30 years ago rings as true now as it did then. When the article was written, Haida Gwaii was known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. In the intervening years, a cultural revival led to a historic reconciliation agreement with the government of Canada, which restored the traditional Haida name.
