#Nirvana recorded their MTV Unplugged show this week in 1993. "When Nirvana taped their 1993 'Unplugged' special, MTV was hoping for a set of greatest hits and an Eddie Vedder cameo. Instead, #KurtCobain and Co. played the weirdest, strongest music of their lives, capturing a Nineties moment of intense hope and dread. River Phoenix had just died, Conan O'Brien had just done his first show. The stage is full of white stargazer lilies and church candles; Cobain wears a fuzzy green cardigan and a Frightwig T-shirt, mumbling his dull stage patter but signing with ferocious passion. They avoid their hits, except 'Come As You Are,' going for lesser-known gems and stunning surprise versions of David Bowie's 'The Man Who Sold the World' and the Vaselines' 'Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam.' All the musicians play way over their heads, including special guests the Meat Puppets. Yet Cobain is the focus – smoking cigarettes, wearing a wedding ring that doesn't fit, rocking back and forth helplessly during 'Lake of Fire.'" From the November 29th, 2007 issue of @Rolling Stone.
