Update on this horrific 3 kitty declaw story. Abby had a bandage put back on because one of her amputated paws was bleeding from walking on the hardwood floors and the owner would have to carry her to use the bathroom. Ryder still has the cone on for 6 months because of his one paw being partially amputated. Teeger walks on both front amputations on carpet and only on one on hardwood floors.
Their story is one of the many reasons why declawing needs to completely end. You can read the whole story on the link on my IG bio. In a nutshell, the owners of these 3 kitties were talked out of using Soft Paws by the owner (a veterinarian) of this AAHA hospital and by the @AVMAvets /AAFP/CVMA vet who did the declaws on 5/13/15. At the $60,000 mark, the vet’s insurance company rep with Firemans Fund, tried to put pressure on these cat owners to euthanize these cats and get new ones since they said the costs were outrageous.
The CVMA gives insurance for their vets, through Fireman’s Fund which is owned by Allianz. I’ve reached out to Allianz and Firemans Fund about this story, through emails and phone calls but got no reply.
If Fireman’s Fund/Allianz stopped covering declawing in their insurance packages for veterinarians, then most likely all these vets would stop doing this mutilating surgery because they wouldn’t want to be liable for things like this out of their own pockets.
Most of the time, when complications like these arise from declaw procedures, the kitties are euthanized and you hear nothing about it.
These things are going on ALL the time behind the scenes in America and it needs to end.
