This intricate art is made of bacteria. It was created on a Petri dish, which allows strains of bacteria (like Salmonella) to grow and spread. The fractal pattern emerges when bacteria swim outward and create a microscopic traffic jam. Synthetic biologist and @TEDFellow Tal Danino replicated these bacterial designs on porcelain dishes, like the one above, in a series called The Petri collection, created with visual artist Vik Muniz and @bernardaud.
