"I was always looking for an excuse to photograph #JanisJoplin with Big Brother & The Holding Company. For me personally, they represented the joy and innocence of San Francisco music in the sixties, more than the Airplane, more than the Dead. They were friendly and accessible, and Janis lived in my ‘hood, the Haight-Ashbury. Janis was often sullen but I constantly worked to get her to smile: 'Getting your picture taken is not like going to the dentist, Janis,' I’d say, and suddenly her wonderful smile would emerge. On this particular day in San Francisco in 1968, the fact is she had just come from the dentist, which is why she is covering up her Novocain-swollen cheek, so my trick was not gonna work.
