Repost from @moustachemannyc "Paraphrasing something I heard the incredible Van Jones say recently: Today we read about Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglas, and John Brown and we imagine we would be right there alongside them, fighting for the freedom of the oppressed. But in reality, so few were. We see videos of Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis and we imagine we would be marching right alongside them, marching for the disenfranchised. But so few were. The vast majority of people were watching on television. ------------------------------------ Today the #BlackLivesMatter movement is fighting for the same freedoms Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis fought for, and Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas and John Brown before them. We are fighting for the freedom and equality of people who have been treated differently under the law because of the color of their skin since they were stolen from their homes and shipped to this land against their will 400 years ago. People in the future will look back on this movement and imagine they would have been there right alongside it. But the reality is that so few are. The vast majority of people are watching from Facebook and Twitter and Instagram. 50 years from now what will you tell your grandkids when they ask you about the historic #BlackLivesMatter movement that changed the world? Will you tell them you clicked the "like" button on the Facebook posts of your friends who were out on the street making the necessary noise to provoke change? Or will you tell them you marched alongside them? It doesn't matter if you haven't marched before. It only matters that you march now. It's not too late to join the fight for freedom. This Saturday in NYC, thousands of people who believe #BlackLivesMatter will come together at Washington Square Park at 11am for #RiseUpOctober. We will march at 1pm. Make history with us. See you there."
