SENIOR SUNDAY! @susiesseniordogs has another success story to share with you today! "Hi, In August of last year I responded to a post on SNAFU Rescue (Short Noses and Friends United Rescue) about a 7 year old French bulldog who they had recently rescued at an auction. She had been a breeder in a puppy mill and that was the only life she had known. My husband and I had fostered a couple of retired Frenchie mamas in the past and absolutely fell in love with them, they had such sweet natures despite their difficult lives. I knew that someday I wanted to adopt one of our own, and when I saw SNAFU’s post I felt it was time, and applied immediately. Within minutes I was speaking to the director of the rescue, and this little mama was ours. We drove 6 hours to pick her up, sight unseen. I named her Sister, because I felt like it was time for her to be one of 'the kids,' to be taken care of, after a long life of being a puppy-making machine. At first she didn’t understand how to use stairs, but she learned fairly quickly. It took only a few minutes for her to learn to 'sit' (she’ll do just about anything for a treat!). And though I didn’t expect her to ever be fully housetrained, it took only a couple of days for her to learn to go outside. When I realized that she was more than capable of learning new things, I tied a bell to the back door to see if she could learn to ring it and let me know when she needed to go outside. That took only a day or two for her to figure out, and we were so amazed!! Now she has some independence and doesn’t have to just wait to be let out. I think she is a perfect example of how great it can be to adopt an older dog. I want people to know there are so many others just like her, sweet, loving older dogs who would be so grateful for a home and family of their own. I tell anyone who will listen to not be afraid to rescue an older dog, even one with a difficult past. The rewards are priceless. -Gina"
