The Deep Enders, an elite corps from the Buenaventura Swim Club, gathered to #swim in the ocean before sunrise. Yesterday, the group began a 70-mile channel relay crossing from San Nicolas Island to the Palos Verdes peninsula on the California mainland. Along the way, the six participating swimmers planned to take one-hour shifts and, according to forecasts, deal with a swell of five to seven feet — enough to make a swimmer seasick. If the team is successful, it will be a first in open-water #swimming. And they don't have far to go: Their swim should come to an end just before the sun goes down in California. @jokemichaels captured the Deep Enders for @nytimessports during a light workout on Saturday.
