The bright lights of the Yau Ma Tei neighborhood in Hong Kong. Since the mid-20th century, endless towers of flashing, throbbing #neon have helped define the landscape of this densely-packed city. #HongKong fell for neon in the 1920s. It was a Western import that quickly gained its own vocabulary in China, combining the ancient Chinese art of calligraphy with modern advertising. But since the 1990s, with the arrival of tighter building regulations and a move toward LED lights, the neon signs that helped turn Hong Kong nights into blazing, garish days are disappearing. @lamyikfei photographed Hong Kong’s neon glow while on #nytassignment.
