Happy Birthday, #PaulSimon! "When Simon was fourteen, his father bought him his first guitar and showed him some chords so that he could play rock & roll songs he was beginning to fall in love with - despite the fact, Simon says with affection, that his father ‘couldn’t stand rock & roll.’ That generosity turned out to have a practical benefit. ‘In the summertime, he and the band would play dances in the neighborhood playgrounds around the city,’ Simon says. ‘They would play fox trots and ‘Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home’ and all that stuff. Then they would book me to play rock & roll.’ ‘So I played with his band - they would just follow me,’ Simon continues. ‘I was maybe sixteen, and I knew all the tunes the kids wanted to hear. Frankie Lymon, Elvis Presley - I knew ‘em all. They guys kidded me, but they were happy to have me there. And the kids were digging it. There was a bit of screaming, girls coming after you, all that stuff.’" From the February 1st, 2001 issue of Rolling Stone.
