I'd like to think The Roots 3rd album #IlladelphHalflife got its kick off date Oct 10th 1995. Technically we messed around in the studio for a few hours in Sept but due to 2 straight years on the road we weren't in the same sync rhythm as we were when we made #DoYouWantMore. I heard about the #MMM but I wasn't too sure if I was gonna go to DC to March. Of course the news always gives you a "the other shoe might drop" feeling at these gatherings. I just didn't know what to feel. I didn't have a crew I roll w/. I was certain the train and bus & traffic of it all was gonna be a nightmare (there is a beauty and naiveness when traveling alone. I do it 95% of the time to this day: get in and get out quick) round midnight the news was on & I felt like they were talking directly to me "go to the #MillionManMarch right now!" I didn't have a "YES SIR!" disposition but I knew in the back of my mind that was the push I needed. grabbed the "Nike boxstash" (every cat has loose change stashbox in the crib somewhere) stacked what I could in my pockets & made a few phone calls. I was told 2 buses are leaving from 20th & Washington Ave at 330am w a few spots left. BET! I started making making mix CDs (remember those?) of the appropriate message music for my discman on the journey down, during the journey down & back. I got to Washington ave at 3:10 ish (I lived 8 blocks away) Was wondering how was I gonna get on the bus w cash in hand, especially when everyone (60 people at least) had pre paid. There was a good feeling in the air....then 330 came....3:50....427...doubt...then disappointment. Something was wrong. Pre tick purchasers got scammed. There never was a bus coming. Damn. Walked home defeated & watched on CNN. I remember @mykelogram laughin at my outcome shaking his head. Instead that morn in an idea he had came into fruition & #Clones was the 1st song worked on instead. We kept the tv running so the spirit of the day was "there" but man I regret not going that Oct morn. 20 years later I'm still a road dog but my heart is a/ those in DC today #JusticeOrElse.
