Trains are my obsession: I wrote about #SoulTrain for my last book cause---well it's Soul Train. My favorite vacation ever is hobo-ing Amtrak Coast to Coast in a sleeper car doing nothin. And my favorite childhood memory is riding the front car of the #MarketFrankfordLine to see #Estro's murals adorn the walls of my journey to school. Much like Gangsta Rap (#SchoolyD hello), not many know that #Philadelphia was a pioneering (& proudly an anti pioneering) Graffiti hub way before NYC claimed the glory in the mid 70s (the NYC gods do acknowledge philly's #Cornbread as a pioneer of Herc levels in the tagging game---those that watched my @nardwuar interview learned of him attempting to lay up #TheJackson5's jet in the 70s) but for me in the 80s? Dude it was all about #KidDestroy aka ESTRO. His murals were on some other level. I didn't dare get off the train to marvel at his death defying art. Many a Philadelphian wanted to know HOW he did his magnum opus: a rabbit smoking a cigar w a bag of gold next to his name in bubble letters in the most dangerous location of #TheEl train... right in the tunnel entrance after 46th street. The entry is about 35 feet high and it's on a curve and in an inescapable pit leading underground---remember those #roadrunner cartoons where #WileyCoyote chases him in the tunnel? Make that tunnel a lion pit 50 feet below w no easy escape. But somehow this mural in its smug way damn near taunts you to imagine how such a great detailed work got done (even gold ashes from cigar)---not to mention his drum machine collection & him rockin the 606/808/&909 at many a block party. Many an unsung Philly pioneer are amongst us and will never be forgotten in the minds of Philly bboys & bgirls. but man losing #Estro is to lose a piece of my childhood. rip brother. #phillygraff
