Photo by @andywcoleman // This week, Chile announced the creation of the Nazca-Desventuradas Marine Park – establishing the largest protected marine park in the Americas. The ocean—covering over 70 percent of the planet—sustains all life on Earth. It supplies more than half the oxygen we breathe and regulates the Earth’s climate. Its fisheries provide employment for 180 million people and food for billions worldwide, and it offers opportunities for recreation, education, and tourism. However, our world's oceans are suffering from pollution, overfishing, sea temperature rise, acidification and invasive species. National Geographic's Pristine Seas project was started to find, survey, and help protect the last wild places in the ocean. On a recent National Geographic Expedition in the South China Sea, we had a chance to explore several healthy reef systems, but these areas are becoming more and more scarce. Here, a parrotfish takes a break from eating and stops for a cleaning by a wrasse.
