A picture of a trogonopetra brookiana or the Golden Birdwing was named by #AlfredRusselWallace who upon discovering the species wrote this quote in his field journal, later to be transcribed into his book The Malay Archipelago, 1857 "The beauty and brilliancy of this insect are indescribable, and none but a naturalist can understand the intense excitement I experienced when I at length captured it. On taking it out of my net and opening the glorious wings, my heart began to beat violently, the blood rushed to my head, and I felt much more like fainting than I have done when in apprehension of immediate death." Ornithoptera croesus are strongly sexually dimorphic meaning the visual and physical differences between the sexes are drastic allowing the sexes to easily identify each other during mating season.
Sadly this particular butterfly is on the endangered species list. Wallace, through a paper that he sent to Darwin helped to spur the publication of the theory of Evoution via NaturalSelection in a paper authored by both Wallace and #Darwin. @Robert Clark @thephotosociety @ナショナルジオグラフィック
