1 of 2 This is the base of the upper section of the skull of a Neanderthal. The human species Neanderthals were a species of human in the genus Homo that became extinct between 41,000 and 39,000 years ago.
Remains left by Neanderthals include bone and stone tools, which are found in Eurasia, from Western Europe to Central and Northern Asia and the Middle East. Neanderthals are generally classified by biologists as the species Homo neanderthalensis, .

I was able to meet and work with Svante Pääbo on a @ナショナルジオグラフィック story about Human Evolution. Pääbo tested more than 70 Neanderthal specimens. The genome is almost the same size as the modern human genome and is identical to ours to a level of 99.7%
DNA analysis estimates, the two species shared a common ancestor about 500,000 years ago, it is thought that a divergence (Divergent evolution is the accumulation of differences between groups which can lead to the formation of new species) our separation dates back to around 800,000 years ago.
Those of us who live outside Africa carry a little Neanderthal DNA in us," said Pääbo, who led the study. "The proportion of Neanderthal-inherited genetic material is about 1 to 4 percent. It is a small but very real proportion of ancestry in non-Africans today, according to one researcher. #HumanEvolution #Evolution #Pbo @Robert Clark @thephotosociety
