Mel D. Cole (@meldcole) never thought he would be a photographer. “I just started shooting shows because of my love of music,” admits the Syracuse, New York, native, who is now known for his pictures of the Roots and other assorted hip-hop titans.

Still, Mel knew he had talent — “I was like, I think these photos that I have are just as good as what I am seeing in these magazines” – and kept at it. He eventually caught a break in 2006, while shooting a Roots show at Radio City Music Hall.
“It was just me and another photographer, and security thought I was official, so I just played the part,” says Mel, who later posted the pictures to the site Okayplayer. “One thing led to another, and the next thing you know I am friends with Questlove and off to shoot Diddy.”
