#AlGreen was born in Forest city, Arkansas, about 40 miles from Memphis, Tennesee, and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, which remains his home, when he was eight or nine. A few years later, after convincing his four older brothers he wasn’t too young, he joined a family gospel group called Green Brothers. Daddy sang bass. But after five years, billed with visiting groups like the Soul Stirrers and the Swan Silvertones, Al succumbed to the temptations of two friends who wanted him to break away and start a ‘pop group.’ ‘I wanted something else other than just having a great time and not having very much money,’ Green remembers. ‘Everybody say, ‘You’re wonderful, you’re just great, you’re fantastic,’ and you go home broke. This doesn’t make me an unbeliever, you know what I’m saying? But my thing was singing – that was how I was to make my living, so I had to go into a field where I could easily do that.'
