Backstage at #CGI2015 while Bill Gates says he expects the eradication of #polio worldwide within one year. Gates has directed serious resources toward this effort through the #GatesFoundation. There has been no incidence of polio in Africa in the past year. The only remaining occurrences globally are in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Once the last case has been contained, three years must pass before polio can be declared officially eradicated. In 1996, on my first trip to the African continent, to Senegal, I saw beautiful things, but the sight of children with polio disturbed and challenged me. It was one of the reasons I wanted to involve myself in West African economic development. We understand in the abstract that global health inequity exists, but seeing it so starkly in the flesh was another matter for me. How was it possible that every West African child had not benefitted from Jonas Salk's vaccination half a century after its discovery? No one will have to ask a similar question regarding polio for much longer. Well done to all who fought this fight. Wonderful to hear of this progress - great news for the world. And thanks, once again, #PresidentClinton, #CGI and #ClintonFoundation, for the insight and inspiration.
