The Los Angeles River is bleak, dispiriting and bone-dry most of the year. Hidden under a blanket of concrete poured 80 years ago, the 51-mile channel winds its way through fields, suburbs, dark city corners and industrial wastelands from the San Fernando Valley to the Pacific Ocean. In an era when cities from Baltimore to San Francisco have reclaimed waterfronts, the river has long been viewed as a squandered resource. That’s where the 86-year-old architect #FrankGehry comes into play. He’s been tasked with restoring the river and devising a way to reclaim the millions of gallons of water lost each year as it streams into the ocean. But critics worry that Gehry — with his portfolio of brash and billowing buildings like the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the @museoguggenheim in Spain — is not the right man for the job. @malmeidapix took this photo in Maywood, #California.
