The poaching for rhinoceros horn, considered an aphrodisiac in China, is threatening the animal survival and the numbers speak for themselves: They were 70,000 in the 1970s in Africa, only 3,500 are left today. In the 1980s, there was a beautiful reserve of 3,000 black Rhino in the Central African Republic. Not one survives today. Slaughtered. All. What chance has a knight against bullets? Fortunately 26 Black Rhinoceros live in the Ngorongoro crater and are protected thanks to the efforts of the German Frankfurt Zoological Society which created a Crater Rhino Protection Task Force. Its armed guards have orders to shoot in order to protect the magnificent animals and they will not think twice! The sun is going down and the light inflames the dry grass with color. All visitor vehicles have to leave the crater before sunset which I admit is so frustrating for the light chaser that I am, but this is the rule. Then, sentinels will observe all night long from the crater rim with powerful military infrared lenses (WWF donation). Thanks to these, rhinos are safe in the crater.
