I woke up early covered in small, red bites. For a second I forgot where I was but the sound of tiny feet shuffling outside my door brought me back to reality. Latvia! Children of different ages and backgrounds are waiting for me to come outside so we can do yoga like I promised them last night. I open the door and their bare feet scatter across the hall, the shyness from our first encounter suddenly present again in the light of the early morning. I brush my teeth and we go outside. A young girl holds my hand and immediately regrets her decision and let's it go. I'm still a stranger. A small boy speaks to me in Latvian; "are we going to do the yoga now?" He has never heard of yoga before but whatever it is, he is excited. "Ja", I say, Yes. Yoga. Let's go. He keeps blinking his eyes firmly and clamping his jaw shut. It's repetitive, a tic of sorts. He holds my hand and we start walking. I ask someone, how long has he been here? Two years. Where was he before? With his family. Where are they now? Gone. I want to take him home. We walk down toward the river and another boy, 13 years old, speaks to me in English. Him and his younger brother have been in the home for half of their lives but every Christmas they get to spend a week with a woman in the United States. "She is going to adopt us" he says. "Any day now." They have been waiting for four years. We do yoga and it's wonderful. The grass is wet with morning dew and everyone is laughing. The poses are funny. Dog, cat, tree. Camel?! Camels don't look like that! We try Savasana in the end but no one wants to be quiet. I'm not sure if they like it but when I ask one of the boys later if I can send him a gift and what he would like he says "Yoga Book". I cry. I get to fly to Sweden tonight. I get to take a hot shower and sleep in a clean bed. And most important of all: I get to hug my loved ones. I get to see my family. These children are all alone in this world. They are children and they are alone. Today, do me this favor: think of them. Think of them. Think of them and remember just how lucky you are to love and be loved. Not everyone has that privilege. @109world
