The @AVMAvets is holding their annual contest to find America's Favorite Veterinarian.
After contacting the offices of all of the current top ten finalists, I learned nine of them declaw cats. Fortunately, here is the one finalist who does not declaw. Dr. Gary Richter has never declawed in his 16 yrs of practice. Well, he did declaw one claw when the vet he worked for at his first practice in San Fran yelled at him and told him that he needed to learn how to do them. He knew in his heart it didn’t feel right so he stopped after one toe. He’s never done one since. When clients contact his practice, @montclairvet Oakland, CA, to ask for a declaw, he and his staff talk them out of it. He says after educating clients to what the procedure really is and the potential negative consequences, most people are appalled at what they are asking to do to their beloved little kitties. “On the rare occasion a client won’t give up with the declawing idea, we clearly have a philosophical difference regarding how to best care for the cat. In these cases, we probably aren’t a good fit for the client.” He says part being a veterinarian is being an advocate his patients. Sometimes this means telling clients things they don’t want to hear. Ultimately he does not feel he could be an advocate for his patients while performing declawing. He is in favor of the AVMA condemning declawing of domestic cats as they have done for exotic cats and of having declawing banned in America.
