"In 1969, legendary music photographer Jim Marshall and I were given a contract to shoot pictures for a book called 'FESTIVAL: A Book of American Music Celebrations.' (It's still available on the used book market, by the way.) Our dream assignment was to criss-cross the country taking pictures at a variety of music festivals, small and large, from folk, to rock & roll, to country & western, to blues, to bluegrass. . .and, of course, Woodstock! Here is a very young, very nervous #VanMorrison at the #NewportFolkFestival, about to go on stage. It’s always fascinated me how many superstar performers and athletes become so incredibly nervous before they go out in front of their fans. There were some other stellar performers that year at Newport, including Joni Mitchell, Doug Kershaw, James Taylor, Big Mama Thornton, the Everly Brothers and Pete Seeger, among others. During the evening concert on July 20th, 1969, the sky was clear and the moon was full. I looked over at Jim, pointed to the moon and said, 'Can you believe it, man!
