TIME magazine’s Karl Vick and photographer Natalie Keyssar followed the police officers of West Philadelphia’s District 19 to find out what it means to be a cop in America today.

In this photo by @nataliekeyssar, first year officer Jonathan Dedos (a "foot beat") questions a group of young men, after a shooting suspect was described as an African-American wearing white and on a bike, a description which could apply to many young men in the neighborhood. This group, at a local park, was vouched for by a man who works with local youth, and the police moved on. July 28, 2015. Philadelphia, Pa.
