A day of peaceful remembrance marking the anniversary of 18-year-old Michael Brown's killing by police in Ferguson came to a violent end when a man was shot by police officers after he opened fire on them.

According to Chief Jon Belmar, quoted by the Associated Press, officers had been tracking the man, who they believed was armed, during a protest. The man approached the officers, who were in an unmarked police van, and opened fire, Belmar said. The officers returned fire from inside the vehicle and then pursued the man on foot when he ran. The man again fired on the officers and all four officers fired back. The unidentified man is said to be in a “critical, unstable” condition.
