Stoked to be taking over the @newyorkerphoto feed for the week where I will be sharing images, anecdotes, quotes and behind the scenes captions from Meru. @MeruFilm opens in select theaters nationwide on August 14th (This Friday!!). Give us a follow at @merufilm for more images and check in at MeruFilm.com for details on openings and theaters near you. #MeruFilm @conrad_anker is a climber’s climber. After 30+ years of expeditions under his belt, from alpine style ascents in Alaska and Patagonia, to first ascents in the Karakoram and Antarctica, Conrad has a very refined taste for iconic climbs. He’s climbed Everest three times, once without supplemental oxygen. Yet, for Conrad, “Meru is the culmination of all I’ve done and all I’ve ever wanted to do is this route and this climb.” After surviving 10 years of difficult expeditions with someone, starvation, loss of friends, seemingly impossible successes and heartbreaking failures, you get to know a person. Conrad has always been the rock for me, never wavering, always solid. He seems to have been cut from a tough burlap sack of another time. He’s made a life of toughing it out in some of the harshest conditions on earth yet has a creative and progressive side in his approach to climbing and bringing people into the pursuit. Beyond his penchant for suffering, his ambition to climb is only matched by his delight in sharing the world of climbing and it’s character defining attributes to the next generation of climbers. He has mentored and encouraged countless young climbers, myself included. Yet, his shining reputation aside, his passion for climbing has not been easy on him, having suffered the loss of many of his close friends and partners to climbing in the big mountains. Part of the motivation in making this film was to share some of his story and take an inside look at what it means to be a professional mountain climber. @conrad_anker at Topavan Basecamp.
