Scrat, a potter, is one of six people who live in the Temple, a building at a commune for #LGBTQ nonconformists. Located on Short Mountain, one of the tallest points in Middle #Tennessee, the #commune is almost certainly the largest, oldest, best known and most visited planned community for lesbian, gay and transgender people in the United States. And yet it is situated in Cannon County, where there are more than 70 churches and fewer than 14,000 people — a ratio that’s high even for the Bible Belt. After decades of semi-secrecy, though — and as what it means to be gay in the U.S. changes faster and more fundamentally than ever — the commune has slowly begun to join the mainstream.
