Five elephants slaughtered, three poachers arrested, and one baby elephant saved:
Gunshots rang out across Tsavo West on the night of 27 July. Security teams from the KWS, #DSWT, and Big Life converged upon the area as soon as possible. They found the corpses of five slain elephants strewn across the plain, their ivory removed. Three poachers were quickly apprehended for the crime, and investigations are ongoing.
Just two days later, we found a tiny survivor of this ghastly incident - a young elephant calf, who we believe is six or seven months old. In a joint rescue effort, he was flown to the DSWT Nairobi Nursery. Despite witnessing his whole family gunned down at the hands of humans, this little guy has been surprisingly friendly from the outset! After spending 38 hours wandering alone after his family's death, he has latched right on to the other orphans and doesn't want to leave their sides. We have named him #Losoito, after the hill near where he was found.

We are committed to make something good come out of this tragedy, and will do everything in our power to help Losoito flourish. We talk about one elephant killed every 15 minutes for its ivory (which is a horrifying statistic), but in this case, 5 elephants were killed in a minute. This MUST change.
