The #DSWT/KWS Meru Vet Team was recently called to urgently treat an elephant calf, who had been horrifically snared on his hind leg. Because the calf was huddled among a herd of 20 elephants, including his protective mother, the vet made the decision to dart the mother so that her baby could be quickly and safely treated.

The vet worked quickly to remove the snare with a wire cutter, clean the wound, and apply healing green clay. Mother and baby were then revived and quickly joined the rest of their herd, who was anxiously waiting nearby. Pictured here, they are all reunited – and the vets are confident that the calf will make a speedy recovery.
