This majestic cave in Oregon’s Mount Hood was carved by melting ice. In winter, glaciers form when snow compacts into heavy ice and slides down the mountain. In summer, the ice melts and rivers of water carve out massive cave networks in the glaciers. The scalloped pattern comes from warm air moving through the cave. This photo was taken by cave explorer Brent McGregor shortly before the cave walls collapsed. See more at go.ted.com/icecaves and follow @glacier_cave_explorers
