Tulla, a 10-month-old lion who was headed for the @detroitzoo in August 1962. The animal traveled aboard a freighter that took 50 days to reach New York from Cape Town, by way of the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean. Others aboard the ship: Five rhinoceroses, four elephants, four giraffes and three zebras. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer William C. Eckenberg was there to capture their arrival. William had also photographed the attempted rescue of the cave explorer Floyd Collins in 1925 and Charles A. Lindbergh’s takeoff for Paris in 1927. In other words, he was used to excitement. We’re sharing photos of seafaring animals from the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #archives for #nytweekender.
