While trekking in Gombe Stream National Park in the far western side of Tanzania, I had an amazing 20 or so minutes to sit and watch this wild chimpanzee. These are the same chimps that a young Jane Goodall became so famous for studying decades ago. Their behavior and intelligence is uncanny. I watched from a distance as this chimp studied me and listened to the calls of his family in the distant trees. The pensive and at times motionless nature of this chimp allowed me to get some beautiful images, especially in the low light of the forest. Their eyes tell so much, truly windows to a deeper soul. This is one of my favorite portraits. It was a special moment I will not soon forget. Photo by @magnumji
