The Confederate flag was removed from the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse to the applause of thousands on Friday. The murder of nine churchgoers at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston last month reignited the debate surrounding the controversial symbol, after Dylann Roof, who has been charged in the shootings, was seen holding the flag in photos.
