Men working on the twin train tunnels between Manhattan’s Pennsylvania Station and New Jersey in 1908. Today, the tunnels, used by @amtrak and @njtransit, urgently need repair. Passenger traffic under the Hudson River — and by association a hefty chunk of the nation’s economy — relies on a couple of broken-down, century-old tunnels strained to capacity. They serve trains that at rush hour have come to resemble the Marx Brothers’ stateroom scene. A plan for a pair of new passenger tunnels under the Hudson, called Gateway, would create two new passenger rail tunnels feeding into #PennStation. This photo came from the newsroom #archives of @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, known as “the morgue.”
