Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Photographed on assignment for the New York Times, this was the front page photograph of the NYT Travel Section on Sunday, December 28th, 2014.

This is a German communications trench which leads directly to the front line. A horrific battle took place here a hundred years ago. Germans completely surrounded the French depriving them of water. But the French courageously went on fighting for days until their ammunition was exhausted. It is in the Bois d'Ailly, a portion of the Apremont Forest near St Mihiel, France. The French trench is now known as the Trench of Thirst.
The French and German lines are so close on this battlefield that opposing troops could easily hear each other talking.
