Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi/@thephotosociety | Cover image of the August 2014 National Geographic Latin American edition. Photographing this bust of German Field Marshall Paul von Hindenburg was probably the most dangerous 30 minutes since this project began. It’s located on land designated a Red Zone...where the devastation to the earth a century ago was so violent that the land remains unusable today. To get to this site, we traversed multiple deep shell craters, crossed the original front line trenches of both armies and passed through a small hole in the earth whose diameter we had to enlarge to allow us to crawl through feet first into a partially collapsed underground space. My friend who led me to this place, a 74 year old former French Marine whose demeanor was always composed and fearless, was visibly nervous. He kept whispering, “Jeffrey, hurry up” fearing that roof, filled with deep fractures from heavy shelling a hundred years ago, might collapse at any time. The space was narrow. The camera gear had to be passed through the access hole piece-by-piece. To get this shot, I leaned over a stone ledge and held the camera in one hand beneath the ledge while my friend held a softbox and speed light. Carved by a German WWI soldier a century ago, this carving was in danger of being lost forever under the unstable roof of this space when we were there in 2013. It may now be buried under tons of rubble.
