Trooper & Tyler McGibbon, Labrador Retriever and Retired U.S. Army SGT, Toms River, NJ • Ahead of Veterans Day, I’m teaming up with @gofundme to help raise money for @americasvetdogs to thank both veterans and their service dogs for their service. Not all heroes wear capes, but these ones do! First in our series, Tyler shares his story about deployment to Kuwait, his catastrophic injury, and long recovery with his assistance dog Trooper by his side.

America’s VetDogs’ mission is to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and independence. They raise, train, and place assistance dogs for veterans with physical disabilities; guide dogs for individuals who are blind or have low vision; service dogs to help mitigate the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder; and facility dogs as part of the rehabilitation process in military and VA hospitals. These dogs immeasurably change the lives of the veterans who are lucky enough to receive them, often supplanting the need for many pharmaceuticals.

Each dog costs about $50,000 from start to finish, and they provide these dogs at no cost to the veterans. Veterans consistently turn to GoFundMe for help affording and caring for service dogs - a cause that is not currently supported by the VA.
