On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton – a majorette and honor student from the south side of Chicago – marched in President Obama’s 2nd inaugural parade. One week later, after finishing final exams, Hadiya was shot and killed. Soon after this tragedy Hadiya’s friends asked their classmates to commemorate Hadiya's life - and the lives of hundreds claimed by Chicago's gun violence each year - by wearing orange. To explain the action they said, " Orange is used because hunters wear the color to warn other hunters not to shoot. By wearing orange, we are showing others that we are human and wish not to be gunned down." On what would have been Hadiya's 18th birthday, June 2nd, Everytown is asking people to honor her life and the 88 Americans whose lives are stolen by gun violence everyday.
