Today we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985), Finnish designer and sculptor, who shaped Nordic design and industrial art.
Born in 1915 in Hanko, Southern Finland, he started his career as an artist and became a leading figure of the post-war design movement in Finland. Wirkkala's work, celebrated with a large number of awards, includes glassware, jewellery, sculpture and furniture, as well as everyday objects such as stoves, fridges, electric switches and banknotes.
