#TBT Before our Frank Lloyd Wright-designed museum on 5th Avenue opened in 1959, the Guggenheim Museum was first located on 24 East 54th Street, known as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting. The museum showcased paintings by artists including #VasilyKandinsky and #RudolfBauer—nonobjective artists favored by the Guggenheim's first curator Hilla Rebay—and artists at the core of the Guggenheim collection. The paintings were hung close to the floor, as shown in this installation view from 1948. Rebay wanted the viewer to have an intimate experience with the paintings, and believed the low placement could help foster that experience.
