Please read this...you guys have the power to create a shift here. Use your voice. On behalf of the ASPCA, we really need your help protecting farm animals from cruelty and suffering by urging North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory to veto HB 405, a dangerous ag-gag bill that will prevent undercover investigations from taking place. If this ag-gag bill passes, it threatens the safety of all consumers, as North Carolina is one of the top producers of pork and poultry in the country. In April, an undercover investigation at a North Carolina chicken slaughterhouse revealed workers violently tossing birds, slamming them upside down into moving shackles and throwing injured birds onto piles of dead birds like trash. Unfortunately, North Carolina lawmakers just passed HB 405, and if Gov. McCrory signs this bill, this investigation could be the last time that we get a glimpse into what really happens behind closed doors on industrial farms. “Ag-gag” laws threaten not only to cover up horrific animal abuse and food safety problems, but also illegal or unethical environmental and labor violations. HB 405 is so far reaching that it could even prevent nurses from revealing elder abuse in hospitals or nursing homes, teachers from exposing child abuse in day cares, and workers from documenting workplace discrimination or mistreatment. The bill now rests on Gov. McCrory’s desk, and he has until May 29 to sign or veto the bill. There is still a chance that he could veto the legislation but only if he hears from influential individuals like yourself. We’re asking that you Tweet at him - @PatMcCrory - asking him to veto HB 405, and urge anyone you know to do the same.
